Battle of Alford - EWG Game Night

This club night had Dave run an English Civil War battle pitting Covenator Scots against Royalist Scots. The Battle of Alford. Guy & I were the Royalists while Will and Chen played the Covenators.

Note the Aboyne Horse at the bottom right of the image above. This would be the last time you see them.

Turn 1: The Royalist Scots surge forward to come to grips with the Covenators.

The Aboyne Horse moving to strike the left flank of the Covenators were decimated by long range musketry...and I mean decimated, no rout, no panic, no nothing left.

Turn 2: The mass Balcarris Horse unit charge the Gordon Horse, who in turn counter-charged. The crash of mounts and men was heard across the battlefield.

Alas the numbers failed the Covenators as they lacked the experience and morale of the Gordons & were thrown back. The Gordons followed up & caught them in their rout, wiping them out. This positioned the Gordon Horse at the end of the Covenators line.

Meanwhile the Royalists had closed with the Covenator line, the Covenators Artillery suffering misfires all along the line. These melee's ended in multi-turn skirmishes as both forces whittled one another down.

Turn 5: With the Gordon Horse on the flank, the end was nigh as they began rolling up the flank. As the first unit was forced to flee, panic took hold and their commander Bailey, bailed, causing the entire army to test for panic...

Another fun night of gaming at the club. Now everyone prepares for our Mayday Games day. Hope to see you there.

  2. Historically, Lord Gordon was incensed to see the Covenanters in possession of his stolen cattle. This led to his charge, which eventually broke through and won the battle, although Gordon himself did not survive.

    The cows were likely repatriated.
