SAGA Welsh Levies

I have finally completed 9 of the 12 levies for my warband. The last 3 are just awaiting, the final base painting & flocking, then they will also be ready. However with the sun shining & for once, a break in the wind, I went outside to photograph the ones that were completed.

All of the figures are from Gripping Beast. Ahh! I see one of them was fidgeting during the photoshoot. He will be first into battle as his penance.

I will not be worrying about a photo of the last 3 figures as they are the same poses as the ones dipicted here.

Up next I am now starting on my first HOTT/Fantasy Impetus 28mm Army. I've decided to go with an Orc/Goblin army, as I had a bunch of goblins lying around and getting underfoot.

Battle of Alford - EWG Game Night

This club night had Dave run an English Civil War battle pitting Covenator Scots against Royalist Scots. The Battle of Alford. Guy & I were the Royalists while Will and Chen played the Covenators.

Note the Aboyne Horse at the bottom right of the image above. This would be the last time you see them.

Turn 1: The Royalist Scots surge forward to come to grips with the Covenators.

The Aboyne Horse moving to strike the left flank of the Covenators were decimated by long range musketry...and I mean decimated, no rout, no panic, no nothing left.

Turn 2: The mass Balcarris Horse unit charge the Gordon Horse, who in turn counter-charged. The crash of mounts and men was heard across the battlefield.

Alas the numbers failed the Covenators as they lacked the experience and morale of the Gordons & were thrown back. The Gordons followed up & caught them in their rout, wiping them out. This positioned the Gordon Horse at the end of the Covenators line.

Meanwhile the Royalists had closed with the Covenator line, the Covenators Artillery suffering misfires all along the line. These melee's ended in multi-turn skirmishes as both forces whittled one another down.

Turn 5: With the Gordon Horse on the flank, the end was nigh as they began rolling up the flank. As the first unit was forced to flee, panic took hold and their commander Bailey, bailed, causing the entire army to test for panic...

Another fun night of gaming at the club. Now everyone prepares for our Mayday Games day. Hope to see you there.

SAGA Welsh Warrior Unit 2

I have finally completed (as in varnished & matte sprayed) my 2nd Warrior unit of Welsh for my SAGA force. With Mayday fast approaching I am now painting up the 12 levies - which are currently in various stages of completion.

I've been impressed with my friend Tim in Saskatoon's ability to paint tartans, checkered and striped tunics and cloaks, so have taken the plunge and am attempting to give it a try. I do need to practice quite a bit more to attain the same quality as Tim.

Also during my last visit to Tim's, he showed me how he made his own spears using I believe 12 guage wire. Alas it appears I didn't get a good length on the one figure & now he isn't able to stand in the box as his spear pokes into the lid...ahh well, theres always one layabout in every unit.

I have also decided to give some of the Army Painter tuft a try rather that attempt to cut & glue a clump of hemp. You can see an example of it on the left figure of the image above. I do like the look & its very easy to use.

Looking forward to the EWG club night this Tuesday. It's been 2 weeks since I've gotten to play a game, so I am itching to go!

Best of all, I won't miss the Senators game which will fall on the Monday & Wednesday this week.

EWG Games Night 3 Apr 12

This evening was a very small gathering of people for the club. Only 4 attending as many had other commitments that kept them away.

So I took this opportunity to ask Scott if he would bring a game which I have been a long time wanting to play.

Arkham Horror, a co-operative game for 1 to 8 players where you attempt to seal gates that are opening up throughout Arkham to prevent one of the Great Old Ones to arrive.

As there were so few of us, only Scott & I played this game. I did notice however that a person could play solo if they so desired, which may be a good way to work thru the nuances of the game.

As can be seen there are a great many pieces and cards to this game. One of the things I enjoy most in a game is random things & there are certainly plenty occuring here.

An interesting thing about the game is that there is a balance between the number of players vs the amount of gates open that awakens the Old One or the amount of creatures allowed in the outskirts before the town is overrun with terror. As terror moves up, businesses close & prevents the availability of gathering equipment.

Now that I have been introduced to the game I look forward to more opportunities to play!
