Kefcon Gaming Weekend

This past weekend I attended Kefcon (Keeping Evenings Fun), an Edmonton area boardgames convention.

This year it was a Western Themed event & numerous games ran with that theme in mind. However I did not actually get into any of those...playing more along my traditional types of boardgames, as well as a few new ones I'd not seen before.

Friday night consisted of Massive Darkness....we died, just like last year!

I then got into a game called Star Wars - Outer Rim.

We were each dealt 2 characters to choose from...go figure I got Han Solo!

Those familiar with Firefly will see a lot of similarity. The board itself is quite different, forming a half circle. You then sail about the Outer Rim, doing jobs, tracking bounties & performing tasks. The whole purpose of course is to get fame. I quite enjoyed it, although I didn't fare very well.

Saturday I started off with Mansions of Madness with several other folks. I believe we played Escape from Innsmouth.

We started off well enough. I was playing Wendy Adams, the Urchin. I even had brass knuckles to start.

The Innsmouth town mob arrives.

It got to where our priest was pretty much locked down engaging wave after wave of deep ones. He was also our spell caster & was doing quite well with them.

Of course the delays prevented him from determining just what that search marker was.

Unfortunately we were defeated when the Innsmouth mob got to the docks, destroying the boats & preventing our escape. It was a fun game!

I also played games of Escape Plan, & Dogs of War a game I really like!

On Sunday I got into a game called Cerebria, one I had never heard of. It was basically a game of emotions vying for supremecy.

It's a team event & I played Anxiety alongside Misery. I guess he does love company.

Our instructions for the game were muddled & we eventually gave up. Apparently there are 60 pages of rules & they are not well laid out. I would give this another try with someone who knows the rules to run it.

Sadly I never got photos of the game that was likely the hilight of the weekend for me, though the game was dark, it was quite thematic & was called

This game was so good, I ordered it as soon as I got home. Definately not one for the kids!

So another great weekend of gaming. I didn't win any of the Raffles (they had a copy of Gloomhaven!) but everyone seemed to enjoy the weekend & I got to meet some new gamers!

Thanks for reading.

Frostgrave Campaign - Secrets Uncovered

At the end of the first game, the wizards deciphered the prophecy & realized time was short, thus they would need to split their bands to enter the portals simultaneously to collect the Amulets of Constancy to aid in preventing the return of this greater demon.

We had 5 half bands enter the first portal

Pyke the Apprentice

Spengler the Sigilist

Maximus the Summoner

Kalazyn the Apprentice

Barden the Summoner

The split warbands emerge from the portals into the ruins of a temple complex. In the centre sits a large shrine, treasures can be seen, as well as several minor demons.

In the centre of the shrine is an altar upon which sits one of the Amulets of Constancy.

Special:
Any figure attempting to pick up the Amulet must make a will test TN:12, otherwise their action is lost.
The portals the bands enter from remain active until a demon enters through them. Each turn a Summon Demon spell is rolled, starting with TN10. Each turn the TN is reduced by 1. Once a demon enters, the portal closes at the end of the creature phase. A portal can be reactivated, again requiring a TN12 Will test.

Experience:
50xp   Treasure retrieved & removed from board
25xp   Treasure retrieved but not removed by end of game
75xp   Recovering the Amulet of Constancy
25xp   Reactivating a portal

XP is not applied until after the next scenario as they are occuring at the same time.

So here is the lowdown on what transpired.

In the aftermath this is how the warbands fared.

Kazaryn - 40xp

Spengler - 110xp. Stantz (miss game)

Maximus - 260xp, Ring of Transference (Sold), Amulet of Constancy

Bardon - 65xp, Trapmaster Gloves

Pyke - 150xp. Helm, Eardley both killed.

Frostgrave Flailing Wretches

The astute among you will have caught the apparent addition of an 'L' into the word Failing. This was intentional as the more I look upon the figures I've decided on to fill out my Failing Wretches, have arms, that are shall we say, more Popeye like. Now I do own the actual Failing Wretch figure made my Northstar, however the scenarios call for several. Not wanting the same single figure I began my search.

Checking some miniature makers came up short on options. Then I started looking at various 3d print files on Thingverse & came upon

Imps x3 by DuncanShadow

I then asked one of the fellows who plays in the campaign if he could try printing these on his 3d printer. He was happy to help with our campaign, though was leery of the quality it would make.

I am not 3d printer savvy, so waited.

They turned out quite well! These are the 3 from the files provided.

Andrew then printed out 2 more sets to give us 9.

Now the description of a Failing wretch is that they generally appear as old fat men, with stringy hair, and long curving fingernails.  Thus I tried adding some greenstuff locks to a couple of them.

I also opted for a Jaundiced look to their skin as their touch causes Decaying Touch.

So as these fellows have the larger arms, I may make them Fight +2 as our games are always multi-player.

That's one of the wonderful things about Frostgrave, the ability to adapt & create creatures to match what you have on hand.

Of course the actual Failing Wretch figure should be done for my next painting post.

Thanks for stopping by.

Van Helsing Cosplay

Back in September I attended the Edmonton Expo. This year I sported a new Cosplay of Van Helsing.

I have held off posting any photos here (though some taken during the con were posted on my Facebook) as I was waiting for those that were taken by a Professional Cosplay Photographer to come back.

Well the wait is over & it was worth the wait! I bought the 3 Package Special. Each consisted of an Edited, Enhanced & Composite image.

First up the Edited.

Followed by the Enhanced

And the best for last, the Composites!

So with the successful end to this endeavor, I need to thank those who were instrumental in its fufillment!

MAKing Props for the Crossbow Commission
